I'm working on another superhero RPG design. (I know... I know... another one...) But, I'm really feeling heroic and motivated. Anyway, I was reading through Hi/Lo Heroes and noticed the 2006 copyright. Wow! Hi/Lo Heroes is twenty years old!!
Hi/Lo Heroes was one of my most popular RPG zines.
It originally posted on the website 1KM1KT which stood for 1 Thousand Monkeys, 1 Thousand Typewriters. It was a place for hosting small Indy RPG projects and it was an awesome website!
Hi/Lo Heroes was a hit. So much so that the owner of 1KM1KT, Keaton Harrington reached out to see if I was interested in trying to monetize it. I said okay, and Hi/Lo Heroes became the first (and only) paid RPG to ever appear on the 1KM1KT website. It was for sale for about nine months. The experiment failed, and Hi/Lo went back to being available for free.
Hi/Lo even had a few fan blog sites dedicated to it! (That's how you know that you've hit the big time! LOL!) Anyway, I am reading through it now, and I forgot that it was actually pretty darn good. I'm thinking of transplanting most of the character creation stuff in Hi/Lo into my new design. If you have never read it, give it a look!

Hi/Lo Heroes was even translated into French! Isn't that cool!!
Happy 20 years to Hi/Lo Heroes!
Regards,
Jeff

I would LOVE a "sequel in spirit" to Hi/Lo Heroes! I likely generated more character ideas from this 20 year old game than any other random supers system other than V&V 2nd Ed :)
ReplyDeleteI downloaded Hi/Lo Heroes last night and skimmed it. It looks great!
ReplyDeleteYour game neatly and simply addresses one issue I’ve had with comic book RPGs, and that’s modeling the super team containing both deity level city-smashers alongside slight, agile adventurers surviving on wits alone.
I wonder how it would play if one combined it with some of the recent systems you’ve posted about. For example, use the Hi/Lo concept with a third die, one of a different color. The third die and the relevant Hi/Lo die are combined to form a PbtA-style 2d6 result.
On second thought, it seems just great as it is. Bravo!
Thank you! I appreciate the feed back. The High Die / Low Die mechanism of Hi / Lo struggles a bit at the table. It could use a facelift and some new mechanisms. That's what I am working on now!
